the story was alright, it was typical white man saves the day thing but if you consider the mythos and the world as part of the story other than just the main plot it actually has a fantastic story.

other than being hilariously over the top racist and so goddamn anvilicious i walked out of the theater with a concussion the amount of actual story content was so sparse that they had to put it all in the trailer so it fit the minimum length
i dont mind people fawning over it but please, call a 3 hour scenery porn jaunt by its name

it wasnt racist at all though? they literally said that they were enemies cause they were sitting on something we wanted. it was typical human expansionism. the main plot was just fighting the power, which is a typical story, nothing to fuss about. the main thing about the movie though was how it established the world and lore or whatever you can call it. it was 2hours of getting to know the place and basically 40minutes of the action/main plot.

an otherwise unremarkable man who is exceptional only by virtue of being crippled (for years, so he'd lack a lot of motor skill practice to begin with) is given the body of the indigenous people and proceed to not only outperform every living specimen within less than 3 months but actually cement a spot as a legendary and revered leader, explicitly saying that short of matters biological this man is superior to them. real species or not that spells racism to me, and even more baffling perhaps is that the movie whose plot Avatar copies down to the last plot point (that's Dances with Wolves if you're curious) was blasted in it's own time for the exact same thing.
i might be lending too much credit to Cameron's self-awareness as a director. guess you cant argue with a million tickets sold

hes the frickin hero. you're overanalyzing shit. and he only outperforms other specimens cause he's let into the tribe and taught like no one else was. it's just a typical hero story, if you think it's cause the man is superior to them you're really over analyzing pointless shit and every single film to date short of drama films are racist by that definition.

I assumed his amazing physical abilities were because he was a badass marine before he got crippled and he was being trained every day, all day by a skilled catlady during those three months. Otherwise he's an incredibly dumb military cunt who has the luck of the devil (ie when his masterplan basically involved awing the catpeople into uniting to fight their oppressors by jumping onto the biggest flying dinosaur around "IT BIG SO IT DUN WORRY ABOUT THINGS FROM ABOVE. I HOPE." *jumps*)
Ofcourse the entire plot revolved around greed, racism (with us being the baddies) and THE ONE MAN WHO REDEEMED US ALL, but that didn't detract from how beautiful it was to watch, or how well the catpeople's culture and way of life was developed. I assumed it would bank everything on just pretty CG and was pleasantly surprised that some thought had been put into developing the actual world.
